Professor Zanele Muholi is an artist and activist, primarily working in photography and new media installation. Through photographic documentation and visual story-telling, they reclaim their body, their sexuality and their blackness. In doing so, Muholi makes visible and also affirms the marginalised lives of black lesbian, gay, intersex and transgender individuals. Their works can be read as a form of performative resistance through the lens of self-portraiture.
Zanele Muholi is represented in various important collections around the globe and has been awarded, amongst other, the prestigious Chevalier de Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
